Ikorodu Monarch Applauds Revival Of Traditional Sports
The Ayangburen of Ikorodu, Oba Salawudeen Oyefusi, Oguntade 11, has said that the resuscitation of traditional games by Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola of Lagos State, Nigeria, is a good omen to the development of sports in the state.
Oba Oyefusi and his wife, Olori Muibat Olayinka, were part of dignitaries who graced the maiden Ikorodu Oga Traditional Games organised by Ikorodu Oga Traditional Sports Association at Ayangburen Palace, Ikorodu, Lagos..
The competition was held in conjunction with the Lagos State Traditional Sports Association and the Office of the Senior Special Assistant on Grassroots Sports Development to Governor Fashola under Prince ‘Wale Oladunjoye.
The monarch said that he was glad to see the age long traditional games like ayo olopon, draughts, gidigbo (traditional wrestling) being revived, adding that sporting activities are strong tools to promote peace in any community.
“Governor Fashola has done a great job through the office of the Grassroots Sports Development to empower the youths at the grassroots with the traditional games. That is why I believe the people of the state should let him return to office so that he would be able to consolidate on what he has done for the people,†he said.
Five games were competed for in the tournament organised by Princess Adunni Oyefusi-led Ikorodu Oga Traditional Sports Association.
Total prize money of N157, 500 was given to various winners in the games of ayo olopon, draughts, gidigbo,card and ram charging.
In the entourage of Oba Oyefusi were the Odofin of Ikorodu, Chief Kabiru Shotobi, Chief (Mrs.) Tinuade Kofoworola Benson, Iyalode of Ikorodu, Baale Ladegboye, Chief Adekoya Ojuduni and a host of others.
Bolaji Ubaru beat other participants to win draughts event, while Sulaimon Jamiu, Sulaimon Toheeb and Saliu Taiwo came second, third and fourth respectively.
In ayo olopon, Kassim Oniga, took the first position, beating Bolaji Urban, Alado Yinka and Anopa Bode to second, third and fourth positions respectively.
In card event, Wasiu Omotayo came first. Wasiu Yinka came second, while Otolo Laketu and Duke Olanrewaju took the third and fourth position respectively.
In gidigbo, Olanrewaju Olumuyiwa beat other contestants to win the first position; I.K Egbo came second, while Osama Samuel and Omosawe Alexander came third
