Wolves Survive Gombe’s Scare
Injury-hit Warri Wolves shot to second place in the Nigeria Premier League after a display of grit and character away at Gombe United that earned them a 1-1 draw Saturday.
Also Saturday, Plateau United crashed to yet another loss at home as Sharks pipped closest rivals Kaduna United at the Liberation Stadium in Port Harcourt.
Wolves, who now have 26 points from 15 matches, were losing on account of an Adamu Mohammed goal on the hour, before substitute Gift Atiluwa thundered home a free kick with three minutes left on the clock for the equaliser.
However, they could be toppled from second spot if Sunshine Stars get at least a draw at home to Ocean Boys later Sunday.
Hosts Gombe played a man short very late on after their skipper was sent off for a foul on Michael Okoyoh.
Wolves enjoyed the services of NPL leading scorer Ekigho Ehiosun, but were without several other key players like Adama Coulibaly, ThankGod Ike, Amanze Elekwachi as a result of injury.
Gombe are now 14th in the standings with 18 points from 14 matches. Crown won the battle of the strugglers when they defeated Plateau United 2-1 away from home.
Striker Gabriel Agu smashed a brace for the Ogbomosho outfit. This result hardly transformed the fortunes of either side as both teams remain very deep in the relegation waters.
