Eguavoen Bans U-23 Eagles From League
Head Coach of Nigeria’s U-23 Eagles, Augustine Eguavoen, has banned the 25 players he selected for next month’s 2011 All Africa Games qualifier against Equatorial Guinea from playing for their clubs in the Nigeria Premier League, NPL.
Eguavoen said that the players he picked for the final training ahead of the qualifier will no longer feature for their clubs’ league matches.
The erstwhile Super Eagles handler revealed that the weekly release of the players to their clubs has slowed down his plans to build a strong team.
“Dolphins, Enyimba and Kano Pillars, who are the top teams in the Nigeria Premier League, did not release their players early enough for the screening exercise. But they all came at the beginning of last week and sought permission to play the weekend matches which I granted them,” Eguavoen disclosed.
“But after the weekend games that would be it. The clubs just have to make do with their other players because we have an important match against Equatorial Guinea.†Eguavoen said the players have to work more on tactical discipline.
“Technically most of them are good individually with the ball and when it comes to tactical play they struggle. They need to know when to go into space, for instance. So, this is one area we need to work on seriously,†he said. The match against Equatorial Guinea has been confirmed for 26 March in Benin City.
