Police, CDA Set To Flush Out Hoodlums On Lagos Island
The era of hooliganism and robbery on Lagos Island would soon end as the Police and communities on the island are set to form a vigilance committee to help community policing in the areas.
At a security meeting organised by the Pashi/Willoughby Community Development Association in Lagos between residents/traders and police from Adeniji Adele Police Station, all parties resolved to recruit trustworthy members of the community as members of the vigilance team who would be working with the police.
Divisional Police Officer of Adeniji Adele Police Station, Mr. Segun Fabunmi, said the formation of the vigilance team corresponded with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police that emphasis must be place on community policing.
“By so doing, the vigilante will assist both the Police and the community to combat crime in their respective areas. These men, who will be presented to us (Police) for screening by the CDAs, will be given full support and communicate with us regularly to rid their respective areas of criminals.
“Anyone caught, investigated and found wanting will not be spared because the law of the land is against criminality. I want to make sure that crime rate is reduced, if not totally eradicated,†he said.
Reacting to the report that some policemen were informants of the bandits, the DPO implored residents to report any of his men seen patronising criminal areas.
He, however, implored parents and guardians to warn their children and wards to shun crime, “because I will not listen to excuses or your plea to release criminals. Please beg them now before you will later come to beg me, because I will not listen by then.â€
Chairman, Pashi/Willoughby CDA, Alhaji Ibrahim Oladapo informed the DPO and his entourage that the community was tired of the daily robbery and burglary incidents in the area, in which traders’ goods were stolen, adding that anyone who dared to openly condemn the incident would be beaten up by the hoodlums.
