Motorists Advised Against Use Of Expired Tyres

Motorists have been advised to guard against the use of expired tyres for their safety.

Mr. Ayo Sangofadeji, Commander of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), gave the advice on Wednesday in Ijebu-Ode at a lecture organised for secondary school teachers.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the lecture was on “Causes/Effects of Road Traffic Accident“.

Sangofadeji explained that tyres usually expired four years from the date of manufacture.

The TRACE commander appealed to motorists to beware of expired and defective tyres as most accidents that occur on the highways were tyre-related cases.

According to him, out of the 3,390 road crashes recorded by the FRSC in 2008, 540 of them, representing 15.9 per cent, were caused by faulty tyres.

He added that out of the 3,730 road accidents recorded by the FRSC in 2009, 429 of them, representing 11.5 per cent, were tyre-related.

The lecture was attended by teachers, policemen, road safety officials and TRACE representatives, among others.
