Aristide Returns Home In Haiti

Exiled Haitian leader, Jean-Bertrand Aristide has begun a return journey home in Haiti, ending seven years in exile.

Accompanied by his wife, Mildred and two daughters, he left South Africa last night, along with some Hollywood stars, declaring the “great day has arrived.”

South Africa’s foreign office said today that Aristide’s plane arrived in Dakar, Senegal for refueling this morning before flying directly to Haiti.

He was ousted in a rebellion in 2004 but remains hugely popular in his impoverished Caribbean nation.

U.S. President Barack Obama had tried to keep the controversial figure away from his country until it holds a presidential election on Sunday, fearing he could destabilise the process.
