Court Jails Woman For Contempt

For flouting the order of the court to maintain the status quo, a housewife, Mrs. Chizoba Adeleye, has been sentenced to one-month imprisonment at the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prisons, Apapa, Lagos State, Southwest Nigeria, by an Agege Grade ‘A’ Customary Court, Lagos.

The respondent who was dragged to court by her divorce-seeking husband, Mr. Clement Adeleye, was accused of contempt of court by packing out of her matrimonial home and taking her daughter along after the court at the last sitting warned her and her husband to keep the peace until the next adjourned date.

Accusing the respondent of committing contempt of court, the president of the court, Mr. E. B. Shokunle, said: “Mr. Clement Adeleye came to report that his wife left home with her daughter, knowing fully well that the case is still in court. The court had earlier made a pledge to resolve the rift between them before the adjourned date which is today. By her action, she has committed an offence known as contempt of court.”

He sentenced her to one-month imprisonment at the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prisons, Apapa but gave her an option to pay a fine of N10,000.

None of the relatives of Mrs. Chizoba Adeleye was in court to bail her as at the time our reporter left the court.

Her husband, Clement had earlier filed a petition  before the court seeking the dissolution of their marriage due to irreconciliable differences.

Chizoba, in her response to the allegations levelled against her at the last sitting, accused Clement of being insincere with her.

The court adjourned the matter till 4 April and ordered Chizoba to bring her daughter, Favour, to court on 28 March, irrespective of whether she fulfils the bail conditions or not.
