Awka Residents Decry Bad Roads

Residents of Awka and its environs in Anambra State, South East Nigeria, have decried the poor state of roads in the state, while making a passionate appeal to the Federal Government to compel the state government to come to their aid.

The residents said if the roads are in good condition it would open up the capital and also encourage investors to come to the state.

They accused the Governor Peter Obi-led government of non performance, saying that when it rains they find life unbearable because the drainages have been blocked by the clay poured on the roads.

Some of the residents wondered why the roads in Awka and its environs had not received the attention of the state government.

A youth leader, Cornelius Nwachukwu, who resides Achalla bemoaned the poor state of the roads and argued that because they didn’t vote for the incumbent he decided not to rehabilitate the roads.

Another resident based in Lagos, Nkem Ezim, who came home because of the election advised the sitting governor to take a cue from the ongoing road construction under governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State.

He challenged Obi to do something urgent about the state of roads in Awka and its environs.

In his words “the roads are the way I saw them about three years ago. If not for these elections I wouldn’t have known that the roads are in such a sordid state. Something must be done because by the time it starts to rain the residents will have no choice than to stay at home.”

A youth corp member, who craved anonymity for fear of being victimised, disclosed that youths of Awka had visited the State House to make a case but their appeals fell on deaf ears, saying, “even when the present leadership assumed office, the youths had been there several times and they kept telling them that they were coming. Now there is nothing to show, it has been empty promises.”
