How Lagosians Voted For The President
President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has won the presidential election in Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, by a landslide.
Jonathan polled 1,281,688 votes of the total 2,019,116 votes cast in Lagos while the Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN candidate, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu came a distant second, polling 427,203 votes.
The presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change, CPC, Muhammed Buhari came third, polling 189,983 votes while the Progressive Peoples Party, PPP, got 7,479 votes to come fourth.
With this result, Jonathan won 65.89 per cent of the votes cast in Lagos while ACN got 21.96 per cent and CPC, 9.76 per cent of the total votes cast in the election in Lagos.
Out of the 2,019,116 total votes cast in Lagos, 74,072 votes were invalid while 1,945,044 votes were declared valid by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.
In the results announced by INEC’s Returning Officer, Prof. Bola Akinterinwa, Jonathan won in all the 20 local governments of the state, trailed by the ACN and CPC respectively.
In Alimosho, which has the highest number of votes cast in Lagos, Jonathan polled 137,948 as against the 50,636 votes polled by ACN and CPC’s 13,943 votes.
In Agege, where the Hausa were dominant, Jonathan polled 56,865 while Buhari came second with 20,526 votes and the ACN, 18,665 votes.
In Surulere, the home of Governor Babatunde Fashola, Jonathan polled 105,725 votes to defeat the ACN which polled 22,520 and the CPC, 11,626 votes.
In Ikeja, former Governor Bola Tinubu’s constituency, Jonathan won by polling 55,426 votes; ACN, 13,755 votes and the CPC, 13,523 votes.
In Mushin, another strong base of the ACN, Jonathan polled 79,697 votes to defeat Ribadu, who polled 31,231 votes and the CPC, 11,795 votes.
In Lagos Island, another stronghold of the ACN, Jonathan won by polling 25,055 while the ACN came second with 21,186 votes and CPC, 4,157 votes. The same pattern took place in Lagos Mainland where Jonathan polled 47,847 votes while ACN got 18186 votes and the CPC, 8450 votes.
