Post-Poll Violence: Coalition Seeks Trial Of Perpetrators

A coalition of pressure groups, the United Niger Delta Energy Development Security Strategy (UNDEDSS), on Wednesday called for the prosecution of perpetrators of the post-election violence in the country.

The group urged that the masterminds and those arrested in connection with the violence should be tried according to the laws of the land.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that a number of people, including National Youth Service Corps members, were killed in the post-election riots.

“Government must bring to book all those involved in the reprehensible massacres that followed the recent elections in some parts of the north.

“There should be no witch hunting. Every Nigerian must be subjected to the extant laws of the country,” the group said in a statement signed by its spokeswoman, Ms. Annkio Briggs.

It called on the government to speedily resettle the more than 70,000 people displaced by the violence.

UNDEDSS urged the Federal Government to also compensate the families of the victims.

It also warned against making provocative statements on the crisis in the interest of peace and stability of the country.
