Dangote Group Celebrates 2011 World Safety Day

Subsidiaries of the Dangote Group in Apapa, Lagos, which include Greenview Development Nigeria Limited (GDNL), Dangote Cement, Dangote Flour, Sugar and Dangote Port Operation recently joined the rest of the world to celebrate the 2011 World Safety Day.

The event was held at the muster point of Terminal ‘E’ of the Lagos Port Complex (LPC), Apapa, the facilities operated by GDNL. It was a time for staff of the subsidiaries to refresh their memories on the essence of safety in the work place.

As early as 9 a.m. on that day, staff of the various subsidiaries had gathered to learn new ways of ensuring safety within their work environment, including their homes.

Invited guest speakers at the event took turns to lecture and train the staff on various techniques to engender a safe work environment.

Dr. A. Akinboboye of Christ Medical Centre, Apapa, Lagos, who spoke on How to Manage Stress, told the staff that effective management of stress leads to greater productivity for the company and efficiency on the part of workers.

He said that there is need for every staff within an organisation to ensure effective management of stress.

The staff were also trained on Life Saving Scheme and the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Admonishing staff to always imbibe the attitude of safety at all times, Group Head, Safety and Environment (HSE), Dangote Group, Alhaji Zubairu Abdulrahman, said that safety at work health cannot be achieved without the commitment of management.

Acting Managing Director of GDNL, Alhaji Abba Isa Bukar; and General Manager, Dangote Sugar Refinery, Mr Diego Cortez, were among the dignitaries that graced the occasion.

The heads of the HSE departments, GDNL, Mrs Oluyide Oluwaseun; Dangote Cement, Mr. Akani; Dangote Flour, Mr Fred Nkanu, Dangote Sugar, Mr. Zubairu Abubakar and Dangote Port Operation, Mrs Ebere Okpareke, were all present at the occasion.
