Hisbah enforcers stormed Ballat Hughes by Court Road in Sabongari to destroy bottles of alcohol sold by a woman at a joint.

But youths in the area resisted the raid, leading to a violent clash.

Sabongari is dominated by people from the southern part of the country who act in defiance of the law banning consumption of alcoholic drinks in Kano State under its Sharia law.

The youths attacked Hisbah men and set bonfires and barricades across the road.

Nigerian policemen were deployed to the area before normalcy was restored.

DSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, police spokesperson in Kano State said Commissioner of Police, Samaila Dikko had ordered a full investigation into the fracas.

He said two suspects have also been arrested.

DSP Kiwaya said the CP would continue to engage with the Hisbah to ensure that the relative peace being enjoyed in the state is not threatened.

He also said the police had received petitions from hoteliers in the state regarding the operations of the Islamic police.

Public Relations Officer of Hisbah Board, Lawan Ibrahim Fagge, however, refused to comment and said a press conference would be addressed later.
