NLC Warns Governors On Wages

MR ABDULWAHED OMAR., NIGERIA LABOUR CONGRESS PRESIDENT

The NLC has called on state governors who could not pay the N18,000 minimum wage to quit office immediately.

MR. ABDULWAHED OMAR, NLC President.

The NLC President, Malam Abdulwahed Omar made the call on Tuesday in Abuja at the end of labour’s National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.

He decried the negative utterances of some state governors, saying that the NLC was ready to battle the governors and other employers until they complied with the law.

He explained that the NEC meting had deliberated mainly on the guidelines and modalities for the implementation of the new national wage.

Omar said that the union had met with the Chairman of the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission on the guidelines for the implementation of the process.

He, however, stressed the need for meaningful engagement between employers and employees on the mode of the implementation.

The President said the actual implementation of the law would commence on June 1, in spite of the fact that the law was signed in March.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the National Minimum Wage Act, 2011 was passed by the National assembly on March 15 and was subsequently signed into law by President Goodluck Jonathan.
