Egbin To Generate More Electricity
Mr. Mike Uzoigwe, Chief Executive of Egbin Thermal Station, says power generation from the station will hit 1,100 mega watts from the current 880 megawatts by next week.
Uzoigwe told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos on Thursday that Unit 5 of the six units, which had been under repairs, would be re-installed on Sunday.
He said that only four out of the six units were currently working well.
“The station’s installed capacity is 1,320mw and that height will be attained before the end of fourth quarter of the year when the Unit 6, which is also under repairs, will have been installed.
“Egbin is currently generating 880mw from the four units of turbines, which is being distributed based on demand.
“We assure that when all the units are working in full capacity, we will distribute in full blast.
“What we are doing now is to maintain and improve on existing generations,†he said.
Uzoigwe said that four units were currently working well and that Unit 6 was totally down.
He said that Unit 5, which was being repaired, would be installed on May 29.
The engineer denied insinuations that the station has been shut down for inability to generate power.
“Over the years, we have had problems of obsolete equipment and bad spare-parts.
“But the current administration has started tackling the problems very seriously and everything will be okay soon,†he said.
“As for the Unit 6, by the grace of God, we will be able to bring it back by the end of this year and be in a position to reach the station’s 1,320 megawatts installed capacity,†he said.
NAN reports that Egbin Power Station, which is the biggest electricity-generating plant in Nigeria, has a total of six units and each of the units has installed capacity of 220 megawatts.
