His Royal Majesty Etim Abia, the Paramount Ruler of Eket Local Government Area has called for the relocation of the Eket Correctional Centre.
Abia made the call during a courtesy visit by the Controller of Corrections, Akwa Ibom State Command, Julius Ezugwu, to his palace in Eket Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom on Thursday.
He said that Eket Custodial Centre which was built during the colonial era was no longer conducive due to urbanisation and an increase in the population of the people of the state.
“There is a need to expand the existing Custodial Centre to accommodate more recreational facilities and a total reformation of the inmates,’’ he said.
The traditional ruler said that he was aware of the sacrifices and contributions of the command to internal security despite the challenges confronting the Nigerian Correctional Service.
Meanwhile, he solicited more funds for the Nigerian Correctional Service to meet the demands of a modern penal administration.
Ezugwu thanked the traditional ruler for hosting them to a warm reception and informed him that he was newly posted to Akwa Ibom.
He said that it was customary to familiarise himself with Correctional formations in the state.
The Officer-in-Charge of Eket Custodial Centre, Deputy Controller of Corrections, George Njoku, also thanked the traditional ruler for the cordial relationship between officers and the host community, which had improved the rehabilitation of offenders in custody.
