ACN Urges Governors To Pay Minimum
The Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Rivers State chapter has urged the Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF) to reconsider its stance against the smooth and immediate implementation of the N18,000.00 new minimum wage signed into law by President Goodluck Jonathan just before the April 2011 general elections.
ACN in the state said it is its considered opinion that the Nigerian society of today should offer much more than the N18,000.00 minimum wage to its workers, knowing full well that market dynamics in the country have capacity to make nonsense of the approved minimum wage if stringent measures are not put in place to balance the polity.
Party spokesman in the state, Jerry Needam said almost all the states of the federation have capacity to implement the new minimum wage, and berated the NGF for seeking to excuse governors from immediate implementation of the new wage without a change in the present revenue sharing formula of the country.
Needam argued that the Rivers State governor and chairman of the forum, for instance has no reason whatsoever to delay the implementation of the new wage, let alone completely refuse to pay workers in the state.
