Eagles’ Defence Too Porous —Okechukwu

Former Super Eagles’ defender, Uche Okechukwu, has described the current team’s backline as being porous.

He urged the technical crew led by his former teammate in the national team, Samson Siasia, to beef up the defence now.

‘Gentle Giant’, as Okechukwu is fondly called during his active days in the Eagles, spoke during the testimonial match played in honour of retired former skipper of the senior national team, Kanu Nwankwo.at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, southwest Nigeria.

Okechukwu said there is need for the team to be tough and rugged on opponents as it is the only way they can guarantee better results.

According to him, “it is not that the defence of the Eagles is not strong, but the defence still lacks ruggedness, it’s too soft on attackers. I think if the defenders can be hard on strikers, they would be scared of crossing their path.”

He, however, predicted that despite the precarious situation the Eagles find themselves in the Nations Cup qualifying series, trailing group leaders, Guinea on the table, the country will still play at the Gabon/Equatorial Guinea 2012 Nations Cup.
