Supreme Court Swears-In New Justices

Two former Justices of the Court of Appeal, Justice Mary Peter-Odili and Justice Nwali S. Ngwuta were sworn in this morning as Supreme Court Justices by Chief Justice of Nigeria and Chairman of the National Judicial Council, Justice Aloysius I. Katsina-Alu, GCON.

The brief ceremony started at about 10 a.m. when Justice Ngwuta took his oath of office ahead of Justice Peter -Odili.

Justice Peter-Odili is the third woman to be appointed to the apex court. The other women are Justices Aloma Muhktar and Funmilayo Adekeye.

Justice Katsina Alu expressed his confidence that the Supreme Court justices will not fail the court and the nation.

While welcoming them to the Supreme Court, he charged them to be guided by the oaths they took and live up to expectations.

He warned them that they will be vilified in the discharge of their duty by mischief makers but advised them to remain unperturbed as even himself has been subjected to criticisms he did not deserve.

Some of the dignitaries who witnessed the ceremony are Governor Rotimi Amaechi, Governor Timipre Sylva, former Governor Peter Odili, Senator Ken Nnamani, Prof. Maurice Iwu, Senator Ben Obi, former Justice Minister, Mohammed Bello Adoke and politicians from Rivers State.
