‘Lagos Assembly Now Research Centre’
The clerk of the Lagos House of Assembly, Olatunji Taiwo, has described the Assembly as a flourishing research and civic centre where individuals, politicians, researchers and students of tertiary institutions visit to learn about politics, effective legislation and true representation.
Taiwo disclosed this recently added that “indeed, several state Houses of Assembly in the federation have inundated the Lagos House of Assembly with requests for our laws which some even promulgated almost verbatim.â€
According to the clerk, during the defunct sixth Assembly, the House had World Bank Certified Legislators arising from the recognition accorded to the state House of Assembly over its deliberations on the state’s Public Procurement Bill.
He noted that the House was specially invited because of the richness of the proposed law when compared to some types of bills from 18 other states in the federation.
He, however, disclosed that the World Bank intends to use the Lagos State Public Procurement law as enacted as model for other states to copy.
“Furthermore, as part of the achievements of the sixth Legislative Assembly, the Society of Clerks-at-table of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association, African Region, during its last conference in Accra, Ghana in April 2011, unanimously elected the Clerk of the Lagos State House of Assembly as a member of the Executive Steering Committee,†he noted.
The clerk explained that through serious hard work, dedication and visionary leadership, coupled with genuine cooperation with the executive arm, the sixth Assembly succeeded in passing about 60 bills into law that have remarkably transformed the state and brought succour to the people, including infrastructure development.
