Seven officers with the Imo Police Command have lost their job over alleged extortion, harassment, illegal checking of phones and brutality of people of the state.
Imo police Command spokesperson, Michael Abattam, in a statement identified the dismissed officers as Chibuzo Ohakim, Finian Irome, George Osueke, Kelechi Onuegbu, Nwagoro Isdore, Stephen Nwadike and Plastidus Ihemtuge.
He said the police officers were arrested following complaints from members of the public about their activities, including harassment, extortion illegal checking of phones and brutality.
According to him, the offences were committed by the officers in “fragrant disobedience” to the directives by Inspector-General of Police, Usman Alkali (IGP).
Abatam said the officers were arrested on 8 November at a bank in Umuahia, Abia State, outside their jurisdiction while conspiring to extort an un-identified “innocent” resident.
“They were defaulted, tried and found guilty (by police authorities) of the charges levelled against them, thus were summarily dismissed and charged to Magistrate Court, Owerri with charge sheet number no: OW/746C/2022,” he said.
