He enjoined every Nigerian to embrace the ideals of the road safety campaign for the nation to stand out in the evaluation of the success of the global efforts against road carnage.
Mr Dauda Biu, Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has urged motorists to remain vigilant against the threat of road traffic accidents in the country.
Biu stated this in his 2023 New Year’s message, in which he praised road safety stakeholders for maintaining the pace of campaigns in the previous year and asked for support in the coming year.
This is contained in a statement by the Corps Public Education Officer (CPEO), Mr Bisi Kazeem on Sunday in Abuja.
He thanked all FRSC personnel and critical stakeholders for their dedication during the end-of-year special patrol and urged them to remain vigilant in the coming year.
Meanwhile, Biu urged more efforts to consolidate the gains of the previous year’s campaigns in order to restore sanity on the nation’s roads and road users’ confidence in using road transportation.
According to him, the UN General Assembly’s ongoing global campaign is important for a safer road environment.
This, he said was under the auspices of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety: 2021-2030 and the role that individual and corporate organizations could play in its realization.
The FRSC boss urged every Nigerian to embrace the ideals of the road safety campaign in order for the country to stand out in the assessment of the global effort to combat road carnage.
He stated that Nigeria was one of the UN member countries that launched the global road safety campaign in 2010 and has remained actively involved in ensuring its success over the years.
However, he urged all relevant stakeholders, staff and members of the public not to relent in their efforts in the coming year.
He reassured road travellers of their safety and convenience during the new year celebration and return trips, reiterating his commitment to staff welfare policies in the new year.
He enjoined road users not to treat issues of road safety with levity, stressing that road traffic crashes won’t just happen.
“Road crashes are caused and can be averted if motorists adhere strictly to traffic rules and regulations.
“For the avoidance of doubt, members of the public should not hesitate to report road traffic crashes, obstruction or other emergencies to the FRSC Toll-Free line: 122.
“They can tune into the National Traffic Radio on 107.1FM Abuja with the studio numbers: 09067000015 and 08052998090 respectively,” he disclosed.
