Boxing Bout Ends In Controversy
Hundreds of boxing fans went home disappointed when a controversial call was made in one of the boxing events at the Garden City Games.
The +81 Women Kg bout featuring Lagos State boxer, Yetunde Alimi and Kemi Lawal of Ondo State went the way of the Lagos representative with a 20-17 points score which was boldly reflected on the computer scoreboard facing a section of the spectators.
However, when Alimi was declared winner, her Ondo State counterpart cried foul play as she refused to leave the ring which brought proceedings to a standstill.
After about 10 minutes of deliberations by the officials, a call was made that the bout should be retaken. This drew the ire of the fans.
The Secretary General of the Nigeria Boxing Federation, (NBF), Patrick Uwagbale ordered that the bout be retaken after Ondo had threatened to pull out of the event, but this did not go well with the judges who said the call by the boxing scribe was a dent on their integrity.
