19 students of Akwa Ibom State University arrested for internet fraud

Nineteen undergraduates of Akwa Ibom State University, in Mkpat-Enin, were on Friday, April 28, 2023, arrested for suspected internet-related offenses.

The undergraduates were arrested by operatives of the Uyo Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

They were arrested at their private hostels: Obong Abasi Lodge and Mfon Obong Lodge both located at Ikot Akpadem in Mkpat-Enin Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State.

Their arrest followed several months of surveillance on their suspected involvement in romance scams, fraudulent cryptocurrency transactions, and impersonation.

Items recovered from them include several laptops and mobile phones.

EFCC’s spokesman Wilson Uwujaren told PM News on Saturday that the suspects will be charged in court as soon as investigations are concluded.
