Magnitude 5.5 earthquake rocks east China

Earthquake in China

A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck Pingyuan County in Shandong Province, eastern China, early Sunday morning, demolishing 126 houses.

The earthquake struck at 2:33 a.m. local time with a 10km depth at the epicentre, according to the China Earthquake Networks Centre, a part of the China Earthquake Administration.

Capital city Beijing also felt tremors overnight, according to the Beijing Municipal Earthquake Bureau.

As of Sunday morning, 21 persons had been reported injured in the cities of Dezhou and Liaocheng.

Emergency response teams have been summoned, according to officials.

In response to the earthquake, China Railway Group paused some train operations on routes such as the Beijing-Shanghai Railway and the Beijing-Kowloon Railway, according to CCTV.
