The 2023 AFCON, the 34th is one of the biggest sports events in Africa scheduled to start this January. The tournament will take place in Ivory Coast across four major cities starting from January 13, 2024, in Yamoussoukro, Abidjan, Bouake, Korhogo, and San Pedro.
The Nigeria National team has boarded its journey to prepare for the 2023 (AFCON) to start a training camp in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. A team of 25 players is set to meet in an Asian country, with many of the best players making their way from different locations across the world.
Victor Osimhen will be leading the Super Eagles team. Victor Osimhen recently led Napoli to get the league title and impelled them to the Champions League quarter-finals. This will be the player to watch, being the most variable player with more than 30 goals, leading the Napoli prospect.
Moreover, Osimhen is currently the first Nigerian player to win the top prize in the continent since 1999, and also he became eighth in the 2023 Ballon d’Or. The Super Eagles coach also named Bayern Leverkusen player Victor Boniface. The young striker has managed 16 goals and 8 assists in all competitions this season.
AFCON history shows that Nigeria is one of the more successful participants in this tournament, having reached the final seven times. However, there is still a sense of not being consistence since they have only won it three times.
The Nigeria squad is gathering in Abu Dhabi for training before hovering out to Ivory Coast. They will start their battle on January 14 against Equatorial Guinea in Abidjan.
The Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL)
The highest level in the Nigerian league system is the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL). 20 teams in Nigeria compete every year all having the ability to win the competition. When the season ends, three teams that take the last three positions are relegated to the Nigeria National League (NNL). On the other hand, the three best-performing teams in the NNL are promoted to the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL).
Nigeria’s 2023/2024 NPFL began on September 30 and will run up to June 2024. With its long history of producing some of the best players in the African continent, the NPFL has become a source of potential skilled footballers.
Currently, Remo is at the top of the NPFL standings as of January 4th with 29 points, the same as the second-place Lobi Stars who are separated by the goal difference.
FIFA World Cup Qualifiers
After missing a place in the 2022 World Cup, the Super Eagles coach is doing everything possible to make sure that he secures a place in the 2026 Fifa World Cup. Super Eagles are drawn in Group C of the qualifiers alongside South Africa, Lesotho, Benin Zimbabwe, and Rwanda.
Super Eagles have faced criticism from fans after poor performances in their first two qualifier games for the 2026 Fifa World Cup, worrying that Nigeria could miss out for a second time.
Super Eagles were held to a 1-1 home draw by Lesotho in their Group C opener before picking up a single point from Zimbabwe in their second match. The two draws leave Nigeria with two points in Group C. South Africa are leading the group with three points after playing one game and are yet to play their second match.
Super Eagles will be looking to bounce back from their disappointing two draws and get their qualifying campaign back on track.
