Schools Ordered To Get Safety Certification
The Lagos State Safety Commission, LSC, has ordered all schools in the state to obtain safety certification from the commission.
Director General of the commission, Mrs. Odebunmi Dominga, who gave this order, said the commission was doing everything to ensure safety in schools as pupils and students resumed for another academic session today.
“As our children go back to school, we need to, as a government and responsible parents think about their safety. The Lagos State government is determined to do everything to ensure that the safety of our children and wards are guaranteed, not only as they go to school, but at all times,†she said.
Dominga called on all private school owners to ensure that their school buses are in perfect condition with qualified drivers, stressing that there should be safe movement of pupils, proper driver selection and the need for drivers to avoid alcohol and use of drugs.
“Henceforth, the government will take decisive actions against schools that employ untrained drivers while the commission expects to be furnished with reports of accidents on our roads and schools always.
“While wishing all our children and wards a rewarding time at school this term, we call on parents and guardians to be safety conscious always; school proprietors are also enjoined to ensure proper safety standards and measures always,†she stated.
In addition, Dominga said the commission was putting finishing touches to guidelines on safety standards and measures to be observed in the state.
“Also, in collaboration with other relevant MDAs like the Ministries of Health, Education, Lagos Drivers Institute and LASEMA, the commission is embarking on massive staff training for safety and health emergencies, school first aid and medical facilities, while propagating proper lighting, ventilation and others in all places.
“The commission will also love to appeal to all school proprietors, factory owners, industries and all stakeholders to provide emergency exits, first aid measures and preparation for evaluation and fire extinguishers wherever they operate,†she stated.
