Popular Nollywood actress, Destiny Etiko has slammed Nigerians celebrating the return of the Big Brother Naija (BBNaija) reality TV show.
On Sunday, the organizers kick start the season 9 of the show on Sunday, July 28, 2024.
This season’s theme is centred around duos, and there are 28 housemates in total that will grace the screen for 13 weeks, but only one winner will emerge.
The organizers had asked contestants to come with their besties, family members, wives, husbands, and partners to enter the show together as a pair.
The prize to be won this season is valued at ₦100 million, including an SUV.
The show attracted the attention of numerous Nigerians and also trended on social media platforms.
But in a now-deleted Instagram post, Etiko berated Nigerians who are “enthusiastic about the reality show” despite the prevailing economic hardship in the country.
The filmmaker also wondered how people could still find joy in watching BBNaija while the nation grapples with economic and security challenges.
“E don red for our country and I still dey see people dey happy about BBN hmmmmm na wa oh!” Etiko wrote.
‘‘Oh una still get money for data abi?! If you guys do not complain then who am I to do so. I am majorly concerned about the poor masses though. That you can survive does not mean everyone can o.
‘‘Crime is now happening everywhere… Insecurity has become the order of the day and everywhere is calm… THE EARLIER, THE BETTER.”
However, several Nigerians, under various bodies, are planning a nationwide protest between August 1 and 10.
The protest, according to the groups, is aimed to show their opposition against the economic hardship particularly the rising cost of living in the country.
The planned protest has sparked mixed reactions among celebrities.
