Here are 10 quick facts about the legendary “Elegant Stallion”.

Birth and Death:

Onyeka Onwenu was born on January 31, 1952, in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. She died on Tuesday night at the Reddington Hospital in Lagos.

Early Life:

Onwenu’s family originated from Arondizuogu in Imo State. Her father, D. K. Onwenu, was a renowned educationist and politician who died in a car crash when she was four years old.

Career Span:

Onwenu had a diverse career, excelling as a musician, actress, journalist, human rights activist, and politician.

Music:

She was known for her powerful voice and unique stage presence, earning the nickname “Elegant Stallion.” Her popular songs include “One Love,” “You and I,” and “Ekwe.”

Acting:

Onwenu made huge contributions to Nollywood, starring in films like Half of a Yellow Sun and Lion Heart.

Politics:

She served as chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture and was later appointed as Executive Director/CEO of the National Centre for Women Development.

Humanitarian Work:

Onwenu was an advocate for women’s rights and humanitarian causes, including supporting widows through her song “Rise Up.”

Awards:

She received numerous awards, including the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) and Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR).

Activism:

Onwenu protested against NTA for unpaid royalties and engaged in a hunger strike, which led to a resolution of the issue.
