FRSC Decries Traffic Violation By Uniformed Men
The Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC, on Tuesday decried the high rate at which military and para-military officers violated traffic regulations in Lagos.
Mr Jonas Agwu, the FRSC Lagos Sector Commander, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that men in uniform violated traffic rules with impunity.
Agwu said that some retired uniformed men were also in the habit of contravening traffic rules without fear of being punished because of their professional background.
“It has become an embarrassment to us that no attempt has been made by the leadership of the various enforcement agencies to call their men to order in spite of our constant appeal.
“It is pathetic that people hide under their professional calling to break traffic laws and this conduct is not exemplary,†he said.
According to him, 10 of 50 persons arrested for not using a helmet while riding their motorcycles are uniformed men.
“We expect that law enforcement officers must show good example.
“Whether one is a policeman, FRSC official, Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA officer or a Vehicle Inspection Officer or a civil defence man or an army officer, you need to show good example,†Agwu said.
Agwu also criticised the attitude of residents of Lagos to accident victims.
“The attitude towards obeying traffic rules in the state is bad and the situation is compounded by the uncaring feeling that onlookers have towards accident victims,†he said.
Agwu, however, commended the Lagos State Government for providing ambulances for quick response to accident victims.
“We must improve on our ambulance services. The trauma centre at the Toll Gate on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway has been very instrumental to us in managing accident situations.
“Before now, we usually ‘travel’ to give medical care to accident victims, but with the trauma centre there, victims on that road can get quick help.
