Union Dissolution NURTW Elders Caution Opeifa
The NURTW Elders Forum has frowned at the Lagos State Commissioner for Transport, Mr. Kayode Opeifa’s comment in the newspapers to the effect that the NURTW, Lagos State council executive has not been dissolved.
The elders and leaders of the union said they believe that the comment is coming from a novice who just took over a portfolio that he does not know much about.
Speaking during a press briefing in Lagos, the chairman of NURTW Elders Forum, Alhaji Mojeed A Bakare, said: “The national headquarters of the NURTW at Sapele Street, Garki, Abuja, has the sole power to dissolve any state council, but in this case, the national headquarters during the 2011 convention dissolved all the 36 states and Abuja, there is nothing anyone can do about it. The Lagos State council executive under Rafiu Olohunwa stands dissolved by NURTW headquarters.
“Moreover, the NURTW is not under any state government, NURTW is a union like PENGASSAN, NUJ, NUT and many other unions in Nigeria and all of them stand alone, they are not under any state government and NURTW cannot be an exception. So, the elders’ advice to the commissioner is to help him out to guide his duties very well and not to dabble into the union’s affair and later drop out of the government executive cabinet. “So, as a young man and from the people’s zone, Agege, he would do better to concentrate on his duties and not turn to a motor park tout,†the group said.
According to the group, “We the elders of the union, therefore, want the government to leave the union alone, as all the affairs of the union are purely union affairs and politicians should not gamble with our union.
“If Opeifa is interested in the NURTW, he should resign as Commissioner of Transport and take a form and contest as NURTW union member,†the elders added.
