Lagos Lawmakers Decry State Of Mortuaries
Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have raised alarm over the lamentable condition of mortuaries in the state.
The lawmakers at a sitting on Tuesday afternoon also set up an ad-hoc committee to look into the issue and other matters related to it.
The motion calling the lawmakers to the deplorable condition of the mortuaries and their operation was raised by the Majority Leader of the House, Dr. Ajibayo Adeyeye and the Chief Whip, Razak Balogun.
According to them, the condition of mortuaries in the state has not improved despite several complaints from all corners of the state.
They expressed concern that “the poignant odour oozing out of the mortuaries may pose serious health hazard to workers, patients and passers-by within the hospital vicinities and their environs.”
They recalled that the Committee on Health Services in the sixth session of the state Assembly was mandated to investigate the poor state of mortuaries in Lagos State.
They also reminded the House that till date, the report of the committee has not been adopted by the House due to lack of detailed graphic analysis in the presentation of the committee.
The two principal office holders, therefore, implored their colleagues to urgently set up an ad-hoc committee to re-open the matter and come up with necessary recommendations “in view of the importance of mortuaries to the health sector in the state.
