The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) has witnessed a disturbing surge in cases of abandoned babies, with two new incidents reported on Saturday.

The trend, described as alarming, has prompted calls for greater responsibility among potential parents.

Spokesperson for the FCT Police Command, SP Josephine Adeh, expressed concern over the increasing number of babies being deserted, attributing the issue primarily to men shirking their responsibilities after impregnating women.

In a statement shared on her social media handle, Adeh urged men to reconsider their actions, stating, “If you are not prepared to take responsibility for fatherhood, avoid unprotected sex or abstain from it.”

The police spokesperson highlighted the need for societal awareness and accountability to curb the growing menace of abandoned babies, which has significant social and emotional implications for the affected children and their mothers.

The FCT authorities have reiterated their commitment to investigating such cases while urging residents to report instances of child abandonment and provide necessary support to vulnerable women and children.
