PWDs call for special ministry to address their needs
Persons living with disabilities, PWDs,

The Joint Association of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) has urged the Federal and State Governments to establish a dedicated ministry to cater specifically to the needs of persons with disabilities (PWDs).

The call was made by Mr. Shindol Adamu, Chairman of the association in Plateau, during a news conference held on Tuesday in Jos to commemorate the 2024 International Day for Persons with Disabilities.

Adamu emphasized that such a ministry would ensure the full inclusion of PWDs in policy formulation, advocating for their active participation in decision-making processes.

The chairman noted that this year’s theme, “Amplifying the Leadership of PWDs for Inclusion and a Sustainable Future,” was particularly timely, underscoring the importance of empowering and elevating the voices of PWDs in shaping societal development.

“This theme highlights the need to ensure that PWDs are given the opportunity to influence policies, make decisions, and contribute meaningfully to our society,” Adamu stated. He pointed out that while there are commissions at both the federal and state levels, PWDs remain underrepresented in critical decision-making bodies, such as the executive councils where key policies are formulated.

“The lack of representation in such decision-making bodies is why we are calling for the establishment of a special ministry dedicated solely to the issues of PWDs,” he added.

Adamu also addressed ongoing challenges faced by PWDs, including social and economic discrimination, stigmatization, and limited access to employment opportunities. He lamented the difficulties many PWDs face in paying for their education and finding employment despite possessing valuable skills and talents.

“Many of us are talented and innovative, but organizations rarely offer us job opportunities,” he said. “We call on both the government and private sectors to consider PWDs in employment, as we have much to contribute to nation-building.”
