Dele Farotimi, a prominent human rights lawyer and activist, has arrived at the Magistrate Court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State for his highly publicized trial.

He was escorted to the court by officials from the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre, where he had been held since his arraignment last week.

Farotimi’s appearance was characterized by his simple yet bold attire, consisting of a black T-shirt and blue jeans, as he entered the courtroom at approximately 9:55 a.m..

The charges against Farotimi stem from allegations made in his book, “Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System,” specifically accusing Chief Afe Babalola, SAN, of corrupting Supreme Court judges.

Babalola took umbrage with the claims, deeming them defamatory and prompting him to initiate legal action against Farotimi.

The case has sparked intense debate about freedom of speech, judicial integrity, and the role of the legal system in addressing defamation claims.

Critics argue that the prosecution of Farotimi constitutes an abuse of judicial process and an attempt to stifle dissenting voices.
