2024 has been a year of shocking revelations and unforgettable moments in Nigeria, with public figures at the center of controversies, and scandals that captured public attention on Google.

Betta Edu

Betta Edu, the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management, became embroiled in a scandal that led to her suspension from office on January 8, 2024. She was accused of diverting ₦585 million in ministry funds to a personal bank account, prompting President Bola Tinubu to order a thorough investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). As the investigation unfolded, it was revealed that Edu had amassed approximately ₦30 billion across over 50 bank accounts. The EFCC recovered around $24 million from these accounts. Despite public speculation about her reinstatement, presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed in October 2024 that Edu would not be returning to the cabinet. Her position was permanently filled by Dr. Nentawe Yilwatda, a former Plateau State governorship candidate.

Shallipopi

Rapper Shallipopi stirred up rumours of a split with his label, Dapper Music, after removing the label’s name from his social media bio and unfollowing its founder. The news follows Shallipopi’s recent release of the hit single “Order” in collaboration with both his Plutomania Records and Dapper Music. His split mirrors a similar departure by fellow artist Seyi Vibez. Shallipopi rose to fame under Dapper Music with hits like Planet Pluto and Shakespopi. A split would be a significant blow to Dapper Music, which played a pivotal role in Shallipopi’s rise and was recognized for its success in Nigerian street music.

Khaid

Rapper Khaid faced a serious health crisis in April 2024, when he was rushed to the hospital after suffering from internal bleeding. Videos circulated online showing the young artist being taken to the hospital, raising concerns among fans. Fortunately, Khaid’s health has since stabilized, but the incident shows the vulnerability of young artistes in the industry.

Bukunmi Oluwashina

Nollywood actress Bukunmi Oluwashina responded to false rumours circulating on social media in August 2024 that she died. The actress, who is known for her roles in Ayomi and Dear Affy, took to Instagram to reassure fans of her well-being, quoting Psalm 118:17: “I will not die but live, and will proclaim what the Lord has done.”

Sharon Ooja

Actress Sharon Ooja’s traditional wedding to Ugo Nwoke in June 2024 captured the attention of Nollywood fans. With a host of celebrity guests, including Funke Akindele, Bisola Aiyeola, and Big Brother Naija host Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, the wedding was a grand celebration. Ooja, who had previously kept her romantic life private, revealed her partner in a glamorous wedding ceremony filled with vibrant aso-ebi colors.

Adanma Luke

Filmmaker Adanma Luke has faced intense public scrutiny following a tragic boat accident on the set of her film ‘The Other Side of Life’. The incident, which claimed the lives of actor Junior Pope and four crew members in April 2024, led to Luke’s suspension from the Actors Guild of Nigeria and widespread industry boycotts. Although her suspension was lifted, the grief and public outcry continue, with Luke revealing her mental health struggles and seeking forgiveness.

Yahaya Bello

The Federal Capital Territory High Court has rejected former Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello’s bail application. Bello is standing trial for an alleged ₦110 billion money laundering scheme, and the court ruled that his bail application was filed prematurely, as he had not yet been arraigned. This case continues to develop as the EFCC investigates his role in the alleged financial crimes.

Mike Ejeagha

Legendary highlife musician Mike Ejeagha received recognition from the Enugu State Government in 2024 for his contributions to the state’s cultural heritage. The government renamed Obinagu Road to Mike Ejeagha Road in honour of the 40th anniversary of his iconic highlife hit “Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo,” which recently went viral thanks to a dance challenge by skit maker Brain Jotter.

Farooq Oreagba

Farooq Oreagba, CEO of NG Clearing, gained attention at the 2024 Ojude Oba Festival, where he was conferred with the title of Honorary Ambassador by the National Council for Arts and Culture. Oreagba stood out for his striking appearance in a green and yellow agbada, riding majestically on horseback. His fashionable presence at the festival has made him an internet star showcasing Nigerian culture.

Bobrisky

Controversial personality Bobrisky, whose real name is Idris Okuneye, has been in the news for a series of legal battles. In April 2024, the EFCC dropped money laundering charges against Bobrisky, but the flamboyant influencer was convicted of naira abuse and sentenced to six months in prison. Bobrisky was also under investigation for alleged bribery. Despite the legal setbacks, Bobrisky remains one of the most talked-about personalities in Nigeria.
