With the rise of podcasts, and satellite and Internet radio services, there is the fear that terrestrial radio might be losing ground. If you are a radio listener, you know what we are talking about. These broadcasters are the ones who have captured audiences with their humor, their personality and their originality on air. Over the years we have seen many presenters doing their thing and loved their work: Daddy Freeze, Toke Makinwa, Efe Ronald Chesterfield, and many more. However, there are quite a number of others who are also doing very well for themselves. Some of these OAPs are relatively new to the field and some have quite a measure of experience.

Here’s a look at the 3 unforgettable Nigerian OAP that have left an indelible mark on listeners.

1. Daddy Freeze

Ifedayo Olarinde, popularly known as Daddy Freeze, is a prominent figure in Nigerian broadcasting, recognized for his provocative commentary and active engagement on social media. Born on May 6, 1976, in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, to a Nigerian father and a Romanian mother, he later moved to Ibadan, Nigeria, where he spent his formative years. He attended the International School Ibadan and earned a degree in sociology from the University of Ibadan.

Daddy Freeze began his broadcasting career in 1996 at the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State (BCOS) in Ibadan, where he served as a correspondent on the World Chat Show. In 2001, he joined Cool FM Lagos, where he gained prominence as a senior broadcaster and production officer. His journey at Cool FM coincided with his university studies and later his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) placement at the station.

In addition to his radio work, Daddy Freeze has established himself as an event compere, participating in various music concerts, comedy shows, and film premieres across Nigeria, Ghana, and the United Kingdom. He is known for founding the Free Nation Online Church in 2017 and leading the #FreeTheSheeple Movement. His outspoken nature and incisive commentary have made him a controversial figure on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), where he often addresses trending topics and societal issues.

2. Toke Makinwa

Toke Makinwa, born on November 3, 1984, in Lagos State, Nigeria, is a well-known radio personality, television host, vlogger, author, and actress. She completed her secondary education at Federal Government Girls’ College in Oyo State before pursuing a degree in English and Literature at the University of Lagos.

Makinwa rose to prominence as a co-host of “The Morning Drive” on Rhythm 93.7 FM in Lagos, where her engaging style and personality resonated with listeners. She has also hosted several prominent television events, including the Future and City People Awards and the Headies Awards, and created her own talk show, “The Late Night Show with Toke Makinwa.”

In addition to her broadcasting career, Makinwa is recognized for her YouTube vlog series, “Toke Moments,” where she addresses topics related to relationships and lifestyle. Her personal story includes the tragic loss of her parents in a fire accident when she was just eight years old.

In November 2016, she published her memoir, “On Becoming,” which explores her personal challenges and triumphs, particularly regarding themes of heartbreak and self-discovery. The book garnered significant attention and sparked discussions around the issues she raised.

Makinwa is noted for her resilience and entrepreneurial spirit, as well as her ability to inspire others through her diverse career and personal experiences.

3. Efe Ronald Chesterfield

Efe Ronald Chesterfield, a Nigerian OAP, Writer, and media entrepreneur, is the one who looks ahead despite the industry forces thrown at him. He co-sponsors The Sublime Foundation for Africa, an NGO that caters for the Public Speaking proficiency of secondary school students, and clamours for equality among genders. His extensive experience in media, advertising, and public relations has aided his overall development. He’s now a multi-faceted professional.

He delves into political news stories and analyses with #HardTalkWithEFE, a well-known political talk show and podcast that has captivated Africa’s top celebrities and leaders, revealing hidden truths while emphasising social justice and culture.

He is currently a dynamic Radio anchor and reporter at Space FM. The political OAP was born on the twenty-fifth of December in the year 1988. As for his education, Efe attended the Government college ibadan for his secondary school education and further, The Nigerian Institute for Public Relations.

He is a multiple award winning On Air Personality with so much versatility and creativity. Efe is popularly referred to as the golden voice of Space FM, due to his on-air appeal and activism. Born in Oyo state , Efe Ronald is also called ERC by his admirable listeners.

Efe Ronald Chesterfield is among the Space FM male presenters, making girls go crazy over his looks and amazing voice particularly on his daily nighttime show known as #Soul2Soul. Quite young, is he not? Being born in Ibadan, a huge chunk of Efe Ronald’s life was spent in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital with his family.

Efe’s versatility has seen him host high profile events and also given talks at public lectures. He has anchored several conferences organized by the Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) Oyo state chapter, where he interviewed key players in the Oyo state government and helped his audience make sense of the conversations. He grew up in the streets of ibadan in Oyo and his career in the media industry probably started when he was nine years old. During this time, he presented a Children’s Variety Show. He also did voice-overs. In the year 2017, Efe Ronald was the producer of a radio talk show tagged #KidsFirst. In a few years he quickly became a household name in the broadcasting industry.

He enjoys travelling and has a huge interest in food, music, movies, books, social media, public relations, digital and mobile marketing. He is in his mid 20s and very much single. He is a host on Hard Talk a political show which is aired on Monday to Thursdays, 2.30pm to 3.30pm. He also hosts TGIF on Friday nights starting from 10pm, and then Soul2Soul everyday at 10pm.
