No fewer than 90 persons were killed in 188 road crashes that occurred in Edo between January and December, 2024. The State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Cyril Mathew, disclosed this to journalists in Benin.

A total of 471 persons sustained carrying degrees of injuries in the crashes within the period under review.

“From January to December 2024, we recorded a total of 188 accidents, 90 killed while 471 were injured,” he said.

A breakdown of the figures shows that the month of January 2024 recorded more casualties than every other months, accounting for 22 lives.

According to Edo FRSC boss, most of the fatal crashes recorded were as a result of break failure, overspending, dangerous driving, use of phone while driving, route violation and others.

He explained that the Corps is stepping up campaign across the State to sensitize motorists on the need to imbibe safety culture while driving to ensure the safety of passengers and pedestrians.

Mathew who warned motorists against all forms of dangerous driving, to enable them arrive safely at their destinations, called on all stakeholders to work together to zero road traffic crash in the State during the year 2025.
