Lagos State lawmakers on Tuesday met with the Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC) to discuss Monday’s dramatic events at the assembly, including the impeachment of Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
This move marked a significant shift in the assembly’s leadership.
Obasa, a sixth-term lawmaker and three-term Speaker, was removed from office after 32 out of 40 lawmakers voted for his impeachment.
The assembly quickly filled the power vacuum by electing Obasa’s Deputy, Mrs. Mojisola Meranda, as the new Speaker, and Mr. Fatai Adebola as the Deputy Speaker.
The assembly also took decisive action by indefinitely suspending its Clerk, Mr. Olalekan Onafeko, and dissolving all principal positions and standing committees.
The impeachment was sparked by allegations of misconduct, abuse of office, and financial misappropriation against Obasa. This development paved the way for Meranda to make history as the first female Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
However, on Tuesday, Meranda led her colleagues in a meeting with the GAC.
The meeting which took place behind closed doors lasted for hours.
After the meeting, Meranda revealed that they had briefed the GAC on Monday’s events and sought their approval.
“We are here to inform members of the GAC of the latest development, and my colleagues and I have come to receive their blessings as our leaders,” Meranda stated.
Notably, members of the GAC declined to comment on the meeting, and Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was absent.
