Former Chairman of Federal Housing Authority, Mr. Fortune Ebie, has charged Delta State Government to institutionalise town hall meetings to make politicians accountable to the electorate.
Ebie made the call during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Asaba.
Ebie said that politicians must go home quarterly to give account to their constituents in order to sustain their confidence and eliminate recriminations in the system.
“The idea of the town hall meetings is to establish a permanent linkage and communication system between the elected and appointed officials so that they will be more responsive to the wishes of the grassroots.
“This will eliminate anger a lot and it has to be institutionalised and that means that the government itself must ensure that the dates for the meetings are fixed in advance and on a yearly basis.
“The meeting should be funded by the government so that it is not dependent on any politician and the government must also monitor it to ensure that it is held,” he said.
“Government must also ensure that the meeting will be attended by those who hold political offices in the state so as to account to the people on quarterly basis,” he added.
