Local Tennis Coach, Thompson Ewetuga, has rated the ongoing Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis high.
Ewetuga, a member of Grassroots Tennis Initiative Vision 2020, was impressed with the standard of play and the numbers of foreign players who registered for this year’s edition.
“I am not surprised if Nigerian Tennis players fail to go far in this tournament because the standard is high for our players. Some of the players who came to this tournament prepared for it,†he said
Commenting on the performance of Nigerian players in the championship, Ewetuga said there are many factors responsible for the failure of Nigerian players.
He said the local players are not prepared and their inexperience in international competitions affected their performance in the Governor’s Cup.
He said it is a pity that despite the huge amount spent by the title sponsors, Etisalat Nigeria and First City Monument Bank (FCMB) on the tournament, none of Nigerian players reached the crucial stage of the tourney.
“Our players are not equal to the task. The foreign players have sponsors that finance them to take part in international competitions regularly. “Nigerian players are abandoned to their fate which affect their performance in the competition of this magnitude,†he said.
