Governor's Cup: The Tough Games Begin, As Babalola, Lawal Advance

The Main Draws, second leg of the 10th Governor’s Cup Lagos Tennis Championship, which served off yesterday, get tougher today as more first games will be decided at the Lagos Lawn Tennis Club, Onikan, Lagos, Nigeria.

But Nigerian players seem to have woken up from their slumber with their performance  in the first round games played yesterday in the Etisalat/FCMB-sponsored tennis tourney.

Unseeded Shehu Lawal created an upset as he defeated Moroccan star Anas Fattarn, who is ranked number 834 in the world 6-4, 4-6, 6-2.

Also, Unranked Abdulmumin Babalola outstroked compatriot Destiny Ford Da Silva, who is ranked number 1520 in straight sets of 6-0,6-1, while Candy Idoko defeated Taiwo Owolabi 6-1 in the first set before his opponent retired when the second set was 1-0.

The pair of Fatimah Abinu and Sabath Ibrahim were too hot for Sarah Ellen Hofmann of Great Britain and Volha Kalodzitsa of Belarus in a tight match that ended 1-6,7-6(13), 13/11 in the Women’s Doubles. Adeyinka Thompson of Nigeria, who paired with Nimom Segodo of Benin beat the pair of Natalie Piquion of France and Margarita-Greta Skripnik of Isreal in straight sets of 6-0,6-0.

Ronke Akingbade lost to Dalila Jakupovic 1-6, 0-6, Ranjeet Virali-Murugesan of Indian defeated Bolaji Olawepo 6-0,6-2. Tal Eros of Isreal beat Andrew Fitzpatrick of Germany 6-2,6-4.

The pair of Abdulmumin Babalola and Sunday Emmanuel beat the duo of Sanni Adamu and Kehinde Alade in straight sets of 6-3,6-3.
