Former Secretary of the Police Community Relations Committee, PCRC, Lion Building branch who is also the member representing Lagos Island Constituency 1 in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Wahab Alawiye-King has condemned in strong terms, the action of the Acting Inspector General of Police, IGP, Mr. Hafiz Ringim, in sacking the police Special Squads across the country.
In a statement he signed, copy of which he sent to P.M.NEWS, Alawiye-King frowned at the IGP’s action saying that it will lead to escalation of crime rate.
“Even now that we have special squads like the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS and also Federal Anti Robbery Squad, FSARS, the rate of crime is high. What happens when these squads are no longer in place nationwide?â€, the lawmaker asked.
Alawiye-King noted that there has always been a surge in crime rate during election period, stressing that security should be beefed up nationwide in preparation for the 2011 general elections. But he regretted that the sack of the special squads was the direct opposite of what was expected of the acting IGP at this moment.
He noted that the IGP is still acting when he took the action that was bound to worsen the crime rate. Hon Alawiye-King then wondered what would happen when Mr. Ringim is confirmed as the substantive IGP.
The lawmaker opined that instead of dismantling the Special Squads, they should rather be beefed up to stem the tide of crime across the country.
Hon. Alawiye King said the action of the Acting IGP was capable of worsening the spate of crimes like armed robbery, kidnapping has now reared its ugly head in the North and South West and vandalisation of public installations.
He urged Ringim to reverse the decision and take other measurers to ensure improved security nationwide ahead of the general elections next year.
