Kazeem Adeniyi and Rasheedat Ogundele won the Men and Women’s Singles of the 42nd edition of the Asoju Oba Table Tennis Championship which came to a close over the weekend at the Molade Okoya- Thomas Indoor Sports Hall of the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, Nigeria.
Kazeem Adeniyi, who almost lost to Omotayo Olajide in the semi final clash in a game which ended 4 set to 3 in his favour, outplayed Ashimiyu, who was widely tipped to win the Men’s Singles final.
Adeniyi, a former champion of Asoju Oba tournament in 2006, won by 4 set to 2 (11 – 9, 8 – 11, 13 – 11, 11 – 9, 5 – 11,12 – 10.)
Adeniyi, who smiled home with a giant fridge and a cash prize, commended the sponsor for his commitment towards development of table tennis in Lagos State, stressing that Chief Molade Okoya Thomas’ gesture has served as a platform for Nigerian ping pongers to travel abroad for professional table tennis career.
In the Women’s Singles, Rasheedat Ogundele, is the younger sister of Ganiyat Ogundele, who won a brand new salon car during the 40th edition.
Ogundele, said that her sister’s feat in the Asoju Oba motivated her to win the tournament this year. She added that she training very hard to come to this level this year.
“I’ve been looking forward to winning this tourney and I’m glad that my dream come to past today,†she said.
