Weightlifting Association Decries Poor Facilities In Akwa Ibom
Secretary of Akwa Ibom Weightlifting Association, Peter Nyong, said inadequate facilities prevent weightlifters from training regularly in the state.
Nyong told P.M.Sports in Lagos that the Akwa Ibom Sports Council and the state government failed to provide adequate facilities for athletes to train ahead of the National Sports Festival.
“Our athletes are not happy about the poor state of facilities in Akwa Ibom State. Most of our athletes cannot train regularly because of this. It is sad that our athletes cannot train well for the National Sports Festivals which may affect their performance in the festival,†he said.
He said that if there are enough facilities, athletes will come out with their best performance in both national and international competitions.
He urged the state government to improve the sports facilities in the state, saying that if the situation remains the same, the athletes will seek for a greener pasture elsewhere. Without good facilities, I don’t think our athletes can compete with their counterparts in national competitions because they are not well motivated. So, I am appealing to the state government to improve the welfare of the athletes and provide adequate facilities,†he said.
