CBN Open: Mbanu Shocks Lawal

More upsets were recorded at the ongoing 33rd Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Open Tennis Championship taking place at the National Stadium, Surulere, Lagos, Nigeria.

Number one seed in the Men’s Singles, Shehu Lawal got more than he expected yesterday as he was bundled out by unseeded Onyeka Mbanu in easy straight sets of 6-4, 6-2. Mbanu’s victory caught tennis pundits who were at the Sports City to watch exciting games in the competition by surprised. The rookie himself could not believe that he could secure the ticket to play in the quarter final of the tournament on a platter of gold at the expense of the highly rated Lawal in the second round match.

He will face Candy Idoko in the quarter final game today.

Also sent packing from the competition was 16th seed, Ganiyu Salami who was beaten by Thomas Otu in a game than ended 3-6, 6-2, 6-3.
