Land Speculator Remanded

The police at the Zonal Command, Onikan, Lagos State, southwest Nigeria, have arraigned a female land speculator before the Igbosere Magistrate’s Court on a three-count charge of obtaining money under false pretence.

The accused, Alhaja Farunti a.k.a. Mama Okiki, 56, according to the police, was arrested, following a complaint by Mrs. Nkeirika Emachika, that she was defrauded of N8 million by the accused on the misrepresentation that she is the bonafide owner of four plots of land, but failed to provide the land and refused to refund the money.

The transactions occurred on September 2010 at Isolo Okota area of Lagos State.

The offences, according to the prosecutor, are punishable under Section 516 419 and 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Cap. C17, vol. ii, laws of Lagos State of Nigeria, 2003.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge and the presiding magistrate, Mrs. F. O. Abegunde, granted her bail in the sum of N2 with two sureties.

The magistrate also directed that the sureties must be gainfully employed with proof of tax payment to the Lagos State government for three years. They, must in addition, possess landed property.

The magistrate adjourned the matter till 28 June, 2011.
