The Bayelsa Police Commissioner, Mr. Aliyu Musa, on Sunday confirmed the arrest of some suspected political thugs that attacked a youth at a burial ceremony on Thursday night in Yenagoa.

He told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yenagoa on Sunday that the police were deployed to quell a fight at a burial ceremony and it turned out that some of those arrested were political thugs.

“Some ring leaders were arrested by the special security outfit of the police code named Operation Famou Tangbei,” he said.

NAN reports that trouble started when some youths suspected to be political thugs of a former Bayelsa State House of Assembly member attacked a young man said to be loyal to a serving member of the House.

They were said to have inflicted machete cuts on the head of their victim before some persons at the ceremony sent a distress call to the security outfit whose members arrived the scene and brought the situation under control.

The police confirmed that the victim received severe cuts on his head, causing damage to his skull and was lying unconscious at the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) in Yenagoa.

The commissioner said that the suspects would be transferred to the state Criminal Investigation Department (C.I.D) from the Operation Famou Tangbei for investigations and subsequent prosecution.

Musa said that members of Operation Famou Tagbei have also been deployed in rivers and creeks to fight sea piracy and other marine crimes.
