Ekiti State Stages Tennis Tourney

All arrangements towards the successful hosting of the forthcoming National Junior Tennis Championship, which holds from 14 -28 August, are at the peak stage.

The junior tennis event, which will take place at tennis courts, Trade Fair Complex, Ado-Ekiti, is organised by the Ekiti State Tennis Association in conjunction with the Nigeria Tennis Federation, NTF, and it attracts players across the nation, including the Federal Capital Territory, FCT.

The championship will feature both U-14 and U-16 in boys and girls’ categories respectively .

The 1st Vice President of the NTF, Yemi Owoseni, said that preparation is in top gear to ensure that the event is successfully organised.

According to Owoseni, “during the event, a clinic for children between the ages 4 and 12 years will be organised.

He disclosed that veteran coaches led by the state’s chief coach, Babatunde Abe, and supported by Rotimi Akinloye, the senior national coach of the NFF, Ubale Mohammed, the junior coach of the NFF and coach Thompson Onibokun, an ex-international, would be on ground to teach the kids the new techniques of the game.

“We are expecting at least 150 junior players across the federation for the two week-event. We are working tirelessly to ensure that we have a befitting and quality championship aimed at developing the game at the grassroots,” Owoseni said.

He said the tourney will be a -catch-them young programme where talents will be discovered and nurtured to the national level and there are lots of prizes to be won by participants, who distinguish themselves at the championship.

Owoseni disclosed that Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State will grace the event.

“Apart from our sports loving governor, dignitaries such as Chief Molade Okoya, the sponsor of Asoju Oba Table Tennis Championship and former Nigerian football international, Chief Segun Odegbami,will grace the event,” he said.
