Lagos To Organise BRF Table Tennis Tourney

After the poor performance of the Lagos State ping pongers at this year’s National Sports Festival held in Rivers State, the state’s Table Tennis Association, has concluded plans to organise a competition tagged BRF Table Tennis Championship in September.

According to the association, the competition would stroke off with a preliminary round between 21 and 23 September in six zones of the 57 local government and local council development areas. Four events will be decided in the Men’s and Women’s Singles, while team events will hold in both male and female cadres.

The association’s Vice Chairman, Otunba Wasiu Mojeed, said winners at the preliminary rounds in the six zones would converge on the Rowe Park, Yaba for the semi and final billed for 29 and 30 September.

Mojeed disclosed that the association has sent letters of invitation to all the local governments and LCDA on the need to participate in the event.

He said each zone would be handled by the association’s members, who have been enjoined to ensure hitch free competitions.

The move would enable the association to have a pool of ping pongers, who will be invited to camp regularly in order to keep them busy.

The association’s chairman of the Technical Committee, John Peters, said the championship is geared towards discovering talents that will be groomed ahead of next year’s sports festival.

Peter, who explained that the association is not happy about the performance of the state’s ping pongers at this year’s National Sports Festival tagged Garden City Games assured that Lagos will start developmental programmes where the talents discovered from the BRF Table Tennis Championship will have an opportunity to join the class of outstanding table tennis players in the state.
