Five people were rescued after a three-storey building collapsed on Saturday evening at Oroyinyin Street, Adeniji-Adele area of Lagos Island, Lagos State.

For five hours, they were under the rubble of the collapsed building before they were eventually rescued.

One of the victims, a welder, was sitting under the collapsed building at the time of the incident.

He was rushed to the hospital with another person who was also affected.

The other three victims were later rescued and taken to the General Hospital in the area.

P.M.NEWS learnt that the building was one of those that had been marked for demolition since last year.

Abideen Lawal, a resident of the area, told P.M.NEWS that quit notice had been served on the tenants living in the collapsed building.

“The building is already cracked.

The two traders who sell electronics in the shops lost their goods worth N20 million in the building.

“Another person who lost his left leg in the building is a welder.

He has no case because he knew the house was already collapsing before he went to sit there, saying that he wanted to take a rest.

“The National Emergency Agency (NEMA)and the Lagos State Property Development Agency (LAPDA) came two hours after the incident occurred, while officers

from Adeniji-Adele Police Station came to secure the place.

“I live close to them and saw everything that happened because as at the time they were bringing them out, I still heard some voices in that building crying for help and when the police secured the whole place, we could not go there to rescue them before the people from National Emergency Agency arrived and they must have all died.”

He appealed to Governor Babatunde Fashola not to seize the land because the landlord of the house obeyed the rules.
